I stand humbled, I listened to 'From the beginning' at boarding school in the early 1970s on a skinny handheld transistor radio at nights. And 40 years later the music still holds its own as one of the greatest tunes. Its a strong memorable riff that stills transports and uplifts me. Thanks for sharing this - kia ora from New zealand!

Greg Lake had perhaps the best voice of all Prog Rock bands of the 70's. Strong, deep, echoing his voice was. At this video the signs of time were already there. His voice wasn't the same anymore, but the way he sings is still the same. The music and lyrics float like water deep in one's mind/soul.

petervonzurmuehlen: Getting old sucks? Yeah maybe, in most cases at least. But i think your spiritual age matters the most, since it is your mind that determines either your having fun or not. Therefore, I believe that "People don't stop having fun because of their old age; but people do age because they stop having fun".

Can anyone tell me the name of a hauntingly beautiful ballad recorded solo by Greg Lake in the early 80's? I'm desperate to find it!
KatMustang 2 years ago

More information would be helpful, but you could Google the track listings on his two solo albums, Greg Lake and Manoeuvres.
It wouldn't let me post them here.

one terrific song, i'm going to have to learn this one now that i'm up to speed
(drummer turned guitar player). Greg Lake used to chew gum when he sang during ELP 70's shows , which i thought was curious and funny! Am i the only one who noticed this? A true natural talent Greg Lake will always be my favorite singer.
tambourmn 2 years ago
-
Yeah I think Greg used to chew gum to stop his mouth going too dry. Of course water would have been just as good but hey....
PaulRoberts 2 years ago
-
John Lennon also chewed gum while singing.
I have learned to play this song on my guitar, the difficult bit about it is between chanching cords he plays fourth and fifth string loose but demped with his hand.

Hendrix also chewed gum. or at least it looks like he was chewing gum.

Actually John Wetton was the "voice of Asia." Greg performed with them during the "Asia in Asia" tour which was also simulcast on MTV in 1983.
AmishCake 2 years ago

One of the most beautiful songs ever written and performed. Greg Lake was also the voice of King Crimson and the short-lived Asia. If you're an ELP fan, you need to pick up Trilogy.

From the Beginning, written by Greg Lake, was released on ELPs 1972 album Trilogy.
NOTE: The first four notes (the one-note down stroke and harmonics) are EXACTLY the same as those found at the beginning of Roundabout on the album Fragile by Yes.
ELP Trilogy
Released: July 6, 1972
Recorded: January 1972
Yes Fragile
Released: (UK) November 26, 1971 (US) January, 4 1972
Recorded: ???
WHO BORROWED FROM WHOM?? -- or is it a coincidence??

@dwf56 I learned how to play this song watching this video you uploaded. Thank you so much! I saw an interview a long time ago before youtube where Greg Lake said he got that opening harmonic from Roundabout. He thought it appropriate for this song and Yes did not mind it one bit, in fact they were very honored someone "stole" their lick. I tell you what though, it took me months of practice to learn how to play this song and sing it at the same time. Which seems to be the general concensus!

I never knew Lake was the lead singer. But back in 72 there weren't too many videos out showing performances either. We just had these huge albums with esoteric art work. Magnified by pot smoke, jeez what a bunch of idealists we were. Too bad that idealism never materialized. But then again I haven't smoked pot in over 20 years. So...maybe my mind is foggy too...

ol' greg shoulda played this one on a classical. it would sound less tinny and out of tune. and, of course, as we age, we all lose some vocal range.

I always thought this was an open tuning much like most of Greg Lakes acoustic work. Now thanks to this video, I have a new kick-ass song to ad to the song list of my duo, Thanks for posting it! .....................................And yes, way too much modulation on the guitar IMHO. he's playing a beautiful Gibson Jumbo and really should've let the natural sound of that great guitar shine all on it's own. But hay, what do I know?
tkojams 3 years ago
-
I know sometimes it's subjective, but I kinda like it. I know what you're saying, and usually I agree, however; to me it gives it an ethereal feel that fits a song that evokes Celtic imagery (in my mind anyway and I don't know why) perhaps its the wine.
paulgrim96 3 years ago 2
-
But isn't it the video quality that makes the guitar modulate? I dont think he would use so much cuz it sounds out of tune already...

I'm gonna risk unpopularity here and say, "what's up w/ the flange/chorus effect on Greg's guitar?"
I believe that Greg's voice might have mellowed w/ age and brought forth subtle tones that youth didn't allow, but they're seriously undermined by the yes...I'll say it...*obnoxious*...processing of the gtr. Just saying.

Brother, 100% agree w/ you. The J-200 ( or SJ, I don't know) is to be played raw, with no "additives", it sounds heavenly only w/ a mike. I think Greg said what the hell, lets try it with chorus. He didn't care about the performance, in my opinion.

As Lake's voice has matured, he's lost a lot of his vocal range, but I think the overall timbre and sound of his voice has improved. As weird as it seems, I think his voice sounds more intelligent now, which might be why I think the 1992 Albert Hall rendition of the intelligently penned "Pirates" was better than the original. That and Emerson's modernised keyboard accompaniment.

You could be right but I have heard before a 6 string with some sustain + echo effect sound very similar to a 12 string...
aldoegiacomo 4 years ago
-
it sounds like he is running some chorus on his guitar
blackstrat1954 4 years ago
-
I don't think it's a 12 string overdubbed or anything- just sounds like some thick chorus effect. For as good as this guy is, you would think he would be in tune though.
rickyriff2005 4 years ago
-
No ! That's one of Greg's Gibson Jumbo six strings and the effect on the guitar is a heavy Flanger !!! I's not the sound of a 12 strings acoustic guitar...He's playing Live....For what reason he should overdub a 12 strings guitar sound on this clip ??
